Hi April and Steve!
The general idea:
-Bathroom: Its important that the bathroom stays above the other existent bathroom. This will spare unnecessary work and costs.
- Natural Light: the only facade that receives natural light are de south and east facades. The east part of the south facade is the only that can be opened to a lower level so it makes sense to makes this part the work/study/play zone. It has better light and also a view, two things good for activities and unnecessary things to sleep.
After this observations the layout of the room appeared in a natural way. The north part will be the functional zone, with the bathroom and the walking-closet, the east part, with more light, the work/study/play zone, and the west part the sleeping zone.
To conforme a nice regular space in the bedroom, the other program will stay behind a wall with two entrances. This wall will be like a wood surface with two holes were two sliding rectangles can open or close them. One rectangle is coated with mirrors, inside and outside to serve the walking-closet and the bedroom, and the other will be coated in a tint that imitates a black board that will stay in the east part of the room, close to the activities zone. Your children can use it has a sketching board for their legos ideas and for a lot of other things.
This is the most flexible space, and it must be, manly because your children are growing and they can change a lot, not only in size but also in the behaviors and tastes. Thats why it was important to make the room in a regular form so that it can be flexible. I suggest that you demolish that little compartment near the entrance because the walking close has a lot of space to storage things and you can use this zone has a support to a more immediately relation with the room. Its a good place to your smaller dresser so your kids can put their house keys and drop things when they arrive the room. I also suggest that this is a god place to put some shelves so they can expose their legos to everyone who visit their bedroom.
In the activities zone I suggest a round table because is the best way to experiment and try things. Your children can go around and search for the best perspective of their construction. Its also good to search for the better light during the day, making it ideal for the laptops use also. It will be better if the table has only one central leg so they can rotate the chairs better. The other dresser will stay near this table so they can storage things inside like books, legos, toys, etc. On the side of the table I suggest for you to put a puff sofa so that can relax and maybe read a book while doing it.
The other part of the room will be completely empty so they can have some space to use has they want make use of the carpet floor.
The wooden wall will be made of OSB wood because its an interesting aesthetic solution plus it is a low cost material.
The walking close:
I firstly thought about this place has a wooden walking closet continuing the language of the wall, but i think the better solution will be a white space, with more light, and with a structure that you can change and adapt to the needs. I suggest you to search for the "ikea algot" system on the internet to see an example of what im talking about. They have a lot of modules that you can use in different configurations to create your perfect closet. Since the walking-closet it is already closed the modules can be open.
The pavement will be half carpet, in the zone were people stay to choose the and dress the cloth, and half in clean concrete, just beneath the zone were the modules are. This option is based on the functionality of the zone and also will give an interesting aesthetic solution.
It’s a normal simple bathroom has you ask. I choose a shower instead of a tub but if you prefer a tub you also have space for it.
The decoration in the perspective views it is just to give an idea and for you to imagine how it could be the space with some colors and people. I did not want to put a lot of things because the best way to decorate it is with the help of your sons.
