Current deck is 20' x 20' attached to the side of house. French doors from dining room open to it. There are steps off both sides of deck but not at end of deck. At ground level at end of deck is a stone patio which has a poorly built but good size stone fireplace with two foot stone chimney. We have patio furniture in a sort of semi circle around the stone fireplace and outdoor music which emanates from speakers mounted on a shed in corner of lot. Last fall my wife bought a small copper chimerea with screen 360 degrees and fire visible 360 degrees. We use it on the wood deck and have cigars and watch our outdoor TV which is mounted on side of house. We also had a retractable awning which broke and needs replacement. We also have outdoor speakers for the deck. Our problem is we have bifurcated our outdoor entertaining area and are not utilizing all of our space (which is fairly limited.)
We are now faced with the expense of replacing a large awning and rebuilding a stone fireplace, both significant expenses and we would still have to either go way down to the stone patio and enjoy a large fire or stay on deck with our deck furniture and have our gatherings there. Additional considerations are we like to have fires well into December and having some way of enclosing the deck would be great, but certainly any fire needs some sort of chimney.
We would consider a permanent roof over deck, or elimination of most of deck and have one space that is all deck or patio with some sort of covering. Another consideration is I do my grilling on the deck just outside the house and it is nice not to be rained on while cooking.
In summary we need a design that allow us to entertain outdoors, have a decent size romantic fire, has comfortable seating for larger groups, has overhead protection from weather and possibly some side wind protection. I also need to be able to grill near the door to my house.
The total size of the yard on that side of the house is approximately 80' from side to side and 50' deep. It is fenced in and there is a shed in one corner. The deck is 20 x 20 and the patio below is about 35' wide by about 25' deep with a stone fireplace at end of the property line. Stone walkways currently run from steps that go down side of deck to the patio. We have piazza outdoor lighting strung from each corner of the house to edge of property line and then strung back to the deck corners. Low wattage bulbs that provide light without brightness.
With the TV, music, lighting, fireplaces, as well as ice-maker and small fridge on the deck, we have all the trappings of excellent outdoor entertaining space. Because everything was added piecemeal, the whole area does not work together the way we would would like and does not live up to its potential.
We need someone with vision to put it all together in a comprehensive, beautiful, and useful design.
We would consider all potential solutions. Small alterations that are not tremendously expensive are great. Blowing up the entire yard for a spectacular design is within our budget. We are already facing about $10,000 just tofixing the awning and fire place and we would still have same problems discussed above.
