Family room is approx. 22 ft wide and 18 ft deep. Open plan to the foyer which adjoins kitchen/nook area. Features a set of french doors that look out to pool area. Pool wall features a fireplace with an "unfinished" built-in surround. Opposite wall has a set of stairs that go to a bonus room above. High vaulted ceilings with a lot of wall volume. A few upper windows to add light. Limited lighting and electrical in ceiling - 1 can light over fireplace and the fan/light combo in center. Hardwood floors. Wall paint is a soft yellow that is featured throughout the open areas of the house. Ceiling is a half-strength of the same yellow.
Challenges - This room confuses us and we are not sure what it can be. Very high cathedral ceiling, staircase in the space, odd shaped windows, no (or very limited) opportunity to change windows or add additional ones, have filled the space with furniture from a previous home. How to treat the fireplace and built-ins? What to do with all the wall and ceiling volume? We have a television in the space but it is oddly placed and doesn't work well. Do you orient the room to the fireplace? If so, it makes the functionality of the room not as great (this is based on existing furniture though). The fireplace is a great feature but we do live in Florida so is it necessary. If the fireplace remains, how can you "finish" the built-ins? We have a grasscloth selected to go up on the built-in walls - just not sure if they need shelves or ...?
Create a day-to-day space that is functional and comfortable. We have an active 4 year old that uses this space for activities daily so the room needs to be have pieces where games, legos, etc. can be pulled out but need storage for it all as well. A space that can host a handful of people comfortably. Open to all ideas. Interested in layout and elevation concepts with ff&e ideas. Fully intend to execute program that we choose and would consider wokring with designer post competition.
Our style is traditional/french country/ habersham type. The one item that we would like to incorporate (if it makes sense) is the custom black hutch which sits on the wall below the staircase but do not want it to dictate a design program. Have a nice grasscloth with a warm red backdrop selected to go up on built-in walls if it makes sense.
Interested in layout and elevation concepts. Furniture choice ideas with some narrative behind thinking.
