The area in need of desparate help is our Living Room area. I am most unhappy with the large bookcases that are on either side of the fireplace - they are too large and I feel date the house.
I am looking to update the room and add some interest into the space while allowing us to maximize the space for how we live. This space flows into our eating/kitchen area so it is a primary space in our home. I would like to set up the space so that we can comfortably watch TV (the TV is currently positioned too high) and have enough seating for guests.
The fireplace needs to stay put as well as the windows/door along the one wall. I am open to the placement of the TV - can stay above the fireplace but lowered or an alternate placement in the room is fine too. The bookshelves must go - storage is fine along that wall as is floating shelves, etc but no boxy/stark bookcases. The wood floor will stay as it flows into the rest of the downstairs area. Additionally, I would like to have a furniture floor plan keeping in mind how the space will be utilized.
I am open to the use of different materials to add accent/interest. I would describe my taste as 'contemporary cottage'. Open to the use of color around the room but prefer to stay neutral on the walls - would prefer gray or greige tones as a base.
The room dimensions: 16'8" x 15'4".
