Dear Steve and Karen,
Thank you for sharing your endeavor to build a house with all of us contestants. We are grateful and delighted to help you build a wonderful home on the privileged and extraordinary site – it is quite beautiful with magnificent views. Your appreciation of rammed earth makes the project an extra treat as we share the same the appreciation.
So please review the design we’ve crafted for you based on the intentions put forth in the project brief.
A few quick commentaries from our end:
Our proposal suggests rammed earth exterior walls and accentuates the layering that comes with working with the material. The building also has a minimal footprint and this results in putting the bedrooms on the second floor, although the office / extra bedroom is still on the ground floor. The area is around 2,000 NSF.
The pitched roof - in response to heavy snow loads – allows an attic space for storage and we’ve carved out a spot on the roof for a spectacular roof terrace with even better views.
The mud room leads into a laundry area with ample space to wash, dry and hang clothes along with shower and toilet facilities. The interior garage entry is also nearby with a pantry and kitchen in close range.
Your master bedroom has its own in-suite with a freestanding tub that I’d think you’ll enjoy, especially with the view to the outdoors. There are two other bedrooms on the second floor and one can be converted to an exercise room by your request and the ceiling height (to the bottom of the beams in this case) is 8 feet.
Other special features include an outdoor deck with BBQ, double height living space and a really warm fireplace with wood stack in the rammed earth wall at the living area.
Other items of note:
1. Reuse of shale slabs in the entry steps and backyard paving
2. View tower – in this case, a roof terrace carved into the pitched roof
3. Pitch of roof away from entries into house and garage
4. Outdoor deck and cooking area
5. Large viewing sight lines in dining area
6. Plenty of light and views from all bedrooms and interior space
7. Rammed earth walls are shown throughout the house
8. ~2,000 NSF
1. Expansion to west for 2 car garage
2. Expansion of outdoor deck to the north for outdoor hot tub
3. Delete pitch roof and roof top terrace
Thank you again for the opportunity and we hope the final house brings many laughs and joy - happy building!
