The main ideas would be simplicity, practicality and affordability.
I identified several elements which would make it easier for you to explain the overall look to the HDC. First of all the need for naturally lit interior dictated the widening of the door by means of sidelights and also, if possible, making it a bit higher (as high as the existing windows). The new wooden door should have a casing, pretty much the same casing and crown as the windows.
The front end of the gable will be supported by two wooden posts with decorative trimmings, while the rear end will be supported by the facade and the structure of the house. The gable base should be aligned with the top of the existing window casing. The roof will be slanted at 30 degrees so that snow can slide right off, and should have the same finishing as the existing roof.
Considering that the portico is made of wood, I naturally tried to integrate the rail into the overall looks of the house, so I went for a simple wooden rail/ wooden posts with decorative trimmings.
These elements should make the new portico and rail fit right in with the style of the house. It should add a bit of "weight" to the main entrance while looking "light" and "fresh" but at the same time it shouldn't steal the show from such a beautiful and cozy looking house, all this while being affordable and easy to build and maintain.
Please take your time to carefully analyze all the pictures and zoom in for details. The paper size is A3 horizontal.
Thank you and good luck!
