The new addition towards the front of the house includes 3 new equally valuable bedrooms and a bath. The new volume follows the depth of the adjacent garage, creating a new wide patio, which marks the main entrance to the house. All architectural materials that have been used for the facades of the existing building can be assimilated to the new addition. In this way, the new volume -as a whole unit- gets adjusted to the existing one.
All three new rooms have natural ventilation and lightning. Two bedrooms towards the new front of the house share a common veranda, which can be used as a meeting point from the older children of the family.
A spacious play area has been created in the central zone of the new bedrooms, where all children of the family can gather and play or relax. The play area is also being naturally lighted and ventilated; nevertheless the children do not have access from there directly to the garden. This was deliberately designed for their own safety, due to the young of their ages. However, the glass surface of this area could later easily be replaced by a glass door and provide a second separate entry directly to the new addition of the house.
The bathroom, due to its position, can both be used as a children’s bathroom and a guests WC.
Internal layout of the bedrooms: All 3 bedrooms have been fully equipped according to the ages of the users (8, 10 and 13 years old).
The new hardwood floor has been placed on all 3 units. Colors of the walls are proposed to be kept as in the rest of the house (natural warm tones) with some special twists partly, referring to the colors dominating in the room. Colors that have been chosen are thought unisex.
Furniture and colors in each room are only being shown in the submission as a suggestion – everything can be adjusted to the wish of the client.
Floor: All carpets have been replaced by new hardwood floor. Hardwood floor has been extended to the entrance area, in order to bind nicely with the existing ceramic floor. Ceramic tiles remain only at the entrance and kitchen area, which gives the sense of a whole open kitchen to the entrance area of the house.
Kitchen: The kitchen has been kept in its internal as it is. According to the client’s wish, the longest part of the separating wall between the entrance area and the kitchen has been removed. Only a small part remains to mark the entrance to the large new hallway of the house.
Kitchen cabinet remains as it is and the countertop has been replaced by a new one of a brighter and smoother color. Kitchen closets can be varnished (and not painted) to match the new hardwood floor that is being placed to the adjacent family room. A new proposal in replacing the tiles behind the sink is also available at this submission.
Fireplace/ Family room: The fireplace has been relocated to its earlier/ first place. It creates a warm, comfortable atmosphere and casual feeling for the gathering of family members. The existing brick surface around the fireplace gets extended up to the ceiling as a decorative column enclosing the fireplace and the TV. The color and surface of this rough/ raw material gives a nice touch to the rest of the room. The hardwood floor, the warm natural tones of the walls and proposed furniture, all contribute to create a “homey look” for this area. The family room in general keeps a more informal look and can be used as a multipurpose space for family members and guests to chat, relax, or even have dinner while watching a movie.
Room separator: The two areas of the living room and family room are being separated by a piece of furniture used as a library as well as a decorative element. Due to its openings, it creates sight axes between the two rooms; however it offers a clear divide between the two rooms.
Living room: The living room is a spacious, more formal area with stylish piece of furniture, decorated with artwork and keeping a more “clean look” for its guests. Direct access to the backyard is also available from here.
Master Bedroom/ Walk –in closet: The new master bedroom has been extended to its own walk-in closet. The old closet has been removed and a new opening has been designed at its place. The new window has the same measurements as the existing one, as the room was already sufficiently lighted. Also a larger opening would difficulty the furnishing in the room.
