The proposal is focused on design operations that aim to implement the “framework” project.
We intended the original project given by the client as a real “framework project” in terms of precise design principles dealing with interior articulation, space proportions, volumes that remind a clear Bauhaus villa in a very significant way that we tried to maintain and enhance.
As a response to the brief points, the proposal consists on interior and exterior design interventions:
1. To reinforce and give consistence to the living space, we propose an exterior design intervention that integrates a new shape for the roof with projection as a single-carved volume.
Two different options (steel sheet or timber) to show the shell effect that is combined with openness of Bauhaus design proposed in the framework project, to achieve a good balance with other main cube components of the house. Following the same principle of balance between volumes, we propose a similar shell effect for on the top, for the music room.
These exterior design interventions tried to integrate the best potential that comes from the client’s references.
2. The entrance area/wardrobe/guest toilet is conceived as a real atrium for the house. The interior design intervention in this particular case consists of inserting a filter. A steel portal is nestled inside the two walls of the living room, setting the space for the house equipment (wardrobe/guest toilet) that is quite good as a view on the right from the main entrance. Wardrobe and guest toilet are inside two blocks that we propose as marble objects (travertine cladding) with entrance in the long side.
The staircase is part of the atrium so it is designed with the same material we used for the other components. The travertine clads the wall and the stair is made with steel, built with a ribbon effect. A glass wall is on the other side.
3. The cellar area contains the hobby room and the wellness/fitness area. In the first case we propose an open space that it could be easy to use as a workshop so, for this reason, the design interventions just consists of inserting a three pivoting-door in place of a wall. The wellness/fitness area is planned starting from the idea of the podium combined with the portal-blocks solution used in the atrium area. In this particular case the solids and voids alternation is useful to set the fitness area with a treadmill and a bench (void), bathroom (solid), a corridor with entrances (void), sauna for 2 people (solid). In front of the portal-blocks system is placed the relaxation bad, on a small platform that shape this new interior design landscape. A short ramp connects this area with the rest of the cellar, two steps with exterior.
4. The façade is a nice proportion of solids and voids in the framework project. The exterior interventions in this case consist of proposing different material compositions exploring contemporary design options respecting and implementing the original principles. The elevations drawings mainly show the idea of solid gradient, from the most compact (concrete for example) to the shell effect made by steel or timber (less compact but solid), and the very large glass wall (transparent). Photovoltaic and solar can be integrated in the new roof-shape, maybe strip components are quite easier to arrange in this case.
